Follow Me, Boys! 1966
2h 11min | Drama , Family | 1 December 1966 (USA)
Storyline:
Lem Siddons is part of a traveling band who has a dream of becoming a lawyer. Deciding to settle down, he finds a job as a stockboy in the general store of a small town. Trying to fit in, he volunteers to become scoutmaster of the newly formed Troop 1. Becoming more and more involved with the scout troop, he finds his plans to become a lawyer being put on the back burner, until he realizes that his life has been fulfilled helping the youth of the small town.
User review:
I loved it for the look back at how things worked some 50 years ago. I know it is sugar coated. But the importance that people put in different things back then is good to see.
I love the view of how scouting as an organized group can bring the boys and the community together. My kids loved it and watch it again and again. That does not happen much with movies.

Am I really the first person in cyberspace to offer comment on these films? They are of varying quality but definitely worthy of more attention. Coming from the country that used to stigmatise homosexuality as being _la vice anglais_, a moniker that would today be more accurately applied to making slushy romantic comedies with Gwyneth Paltrow, these five short movies explore a wide range of responses to the gay experience. The first is worth the price of admission alone, at least here in Ireland where Arthouse cinemas are heavily subsidised: a riotously funny pythonesque fable demonstrating the sheer absurdity of homophobia which, in an ideal world all bible-belt queer-bashers would be forced to watch. The second is an inconsequential tale about a forgotton condom, the third a weird, disturbing tale exploring voyeurism and necrophilia. The fourth is more camp, a reversal of _The City and the Pillar_ in which a gay man discovers his latent heterosexuality. The fifth and longest casts a dark shadow over the rest, a story of an introverted drag queen and his young son. When I watched this film, most of the couples appeared to be in same-sex relationships: this is a shame, because these films deserve recogntion in a wider, non-gay audience.

Storyline:
Ron, who's young, slight, and privileged, is sentenced to prison on marijuana charges. For whatever reason, he brings out paternal feelings in an 18-year prison veteran, Earl Copan, who takes Ron under his wing. The film explores the nature of that relationship, Ron's part in Earl's gang, and the way Ron deals with aggressive cons intent on assault and rape. There's casual racism, too, in the prisoners and the guards, a strike called by Black prisoners, and the nearly omnipresence of hard drugs. Ron's lawyer is working on getting Ron out quickly, Earl has a shot at parole, and death seems to be waiting in the next cell. Will prison turn Ron into an animal?
User review:
Over the years there have been made many prison movies, but I dont think many of them really reflect how terrible a prison is.I think this movie shows it in a more realistic way than many other movies. The movie tells us that you got to have connections within the prison to survive and that friends are everything. This movie is the portrait of a young boy who ends up in a prison, and luckily he gets introduced with one of the leaders among the white inmates and therefor has a chance. In the roles you'll find Willem Dafoe (which does a wonderful job in this movie) and Edward Furlong who also is very good.As some other inmates you'll find Danny Trejo who always looks really tough and scary and Mickey Rourke in totally new role that I never thought would work for him.See the movie and find out what I am talking about.

Single father Aaron fights to save his 12-year-old hemophiliac son after becoming infected with vampire blood.
User review:
From indie filmmaker Tommy Stovall comes this meshing of family drama and vampire film that doesn't have as much gore but relies heavily on drama.
Aaron is a widowed father who has been struggling with both the accident that killed his wife and his relationship with his twelve-year old son Tate. Tate, a hemophiliac, has been having trouble at school with a local bully, Justin. When Justin trips Tate up on purpose after gym class, Tate finds himself with a nosebleed that lands him in the hospital fighting for his life. When Tate suddenly finds himself better the next day, he is discharged from the hospital.

Storyline:
BAG MAN is the understated story of a 12 year old African American boy, who takes us on an introspective journey out of the city and into the remote countryside of upstate New York. With a mysterious duffle bag in hand, its contents unknown to us, we journey from the urban hustle of Harlem, into the winter-ravaged woodlands a world away. On the road, we slowly discover his real intentions, and the significance of what is hidden inside a young boy's bag.
User review:
A young boy gets woken up by his mother as she heads to work from their home in Harlem. Heading out for the day with a duffel bag, the boy is approached by a hustler looking to employ him, but continues on his way to the train station. Heading out of the city with his bag, the boy starts walking out into the countryside, through ruined buildings and rolling landscapes. And that is about as much as I want to say on this, and the reason for that is that the fact you are not sure where this is going is perhaps the main pleasure of it.
In terms of narrative it will leave you with more questions than answers, and to be honest there is not too much of an actual plot here, more just playing with the viewer by giving us several films we didn't expect on the way. It is beautifully shot and paced though; it goes for half the running time without really doing much but following our silent character, but yet it still engages and draws us in, whether it is the one-sided conversation with the hustler, or just beautiful steadicam shots following the character through rusting barns and down a train line. The music play into this by being patient and reflective. When the developments come they are a surprise and quickly lead to more which are impressive technically but also engaging from a narrative point of view. It must be said that the film does rather drop its effects and narrative on the viewer for impact, then gets out the door; it is hard not to see this for what it is, and you do need to forgive it for drawing you in with a rather measured tone, twisting it, then ending on the same measured tone. Were it a blockbuster it would be called out for style over substance, but to do that here is to do a disservice to how well it draws you in.
Pretty Boy 2015
Pretty Boy 2015
31min | Short , Drama | 4 February 2017 (USA)
Storyline:
'Pretty Boy' is a coming of age story of a young bullied teen, Sean, struggling with his sexuality and the hardships of high school. After his father finds some questionable magazines in his room, this devout Christian will go to any lengths to get his son to find the light and 'perform' the way a man should. Sean is introduced to Katie, a prostitute that understands the stigmas of modern society and helps him see the true light that is within him. 'Pretty Boy' is meant to inspire our youth to follow their hearts, to seek out their true family if '…the family they were born into isn't the family they're meant to be with.'
User review:
"Pretty Boy" is an American English-language short film from 2015. It runs for slightly over half an hour and received some more attention recently because the writer and director Cameron Thrower posted it on Youtube where it scored a solid amount of views already. Looking at the solid deal of awards recognition it received, it is probably his most known work. The cast does not really include any famous names. This is the story of a father who gifts his son a birthday present, namely a night with a prostitute to cure him from his homosexuality. If you say you heard that before, you are probably correct as this plot is exactly the same as in a Sara Gilbert ("Roseanne") short film from the new millennium, even if this one here is longer and the plot details also differ the longer the film goes. I think Rebekah Tripp gave a somewhat solid performance, but everybody else is forgettable, which is partially not only the actors' fault, but also the script's with the way the characters were written. With all the emotional impact this film is trying to make (unaccepted homosexuality, struggling father-son relationship, told to have sex with somebody he does not find remotely attractive, discrimination against prostitutes, dead mother, forbidden mother-son relationship), this is an ultimate tear-jerk movie, but you already realize by the sheer quantity of subjects, the ones I just listed, that it is absolutely impossible to deliver convincingly in terms of story-telling for a half-hour film. So yes, the film may seem touching and emotional, but only to the untrained eye. The trained eye will see a movie that is all just for the sake of it while never being a honorable achievement at all when it comes to realistic story-telling despite trying so hard to be relevant. This film is a failure and 4 stars out of 10 is still (maybe too much) on the generous side. I don't recommend checking it out.

Storyline:
Begoña is a thirty something consultant who has rebelled against her upper-middle-class background and has overdone it with sex ever since her youth. On recommendation of her psychoanalyst she keeps a video diary of her encounters. On Christmas Eve, reluctantly, Begoña goes to have dinner with her dysfunctional family: her stern mother, her married brother and her younger sister. Soon, Begoña, the family's black sheep, clash with her relatives.
User review:
Ok.. this is not an easy film to see, but I have to confess that I enjoyed every minute of the gross and rudeness of it… The performances are all great (at less I think they were all much more than believable) specially Laura Morante as Begoña… wow! The presence of Miguel Bosé was quite good, and the performance of young Miguel Angel Garcia was quite fine, even impressive… I think that this picture might be misunderstood as a poor and grotesque film but in fact I see it much more like an introspection of the human nature before adversities… Vicente Aranda probes to be a very risked director… I loved his work in Amantes but this is a total different kind of film making. Great ending, great ideas… pure originality. If you like bizarre movies about the alienation of human beings this is the one!

User review:
"THE DARK SIDE OF LOVE" Finding Destiny Amos Lassen Jorge Ameer is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated directors working in gay cinema and I suspect that the reason for that is that he makes us think. His movies are always entertaining but they also have something extra that causes us to evaluate what we have seen. His new film, "The Dark Side of Love" takes a look at identity and destiny as if affects four people whose lives come together as they search for who they are and where they are going. Steven (Harsha First)) is our guide here and he takes us by the hand early on and leads us into the film. With the theme of the universality of love, we are shown the four characters who must make decisions that will affect their lives.
Two brothers; Julian (Carlos Sales), a waiter and gay, Michael (Jason Susag), an abusive drug addict fight to gain control of their lives which seem to be going in the wrong direction. Julian develops a crush on a bachelor (who he meets in a very clever way) while the other brother, because of his drug habit and his feelings about his gay brother, has lost touch with reality and has trouble controlling his life. The brothers have been estranged but they are forced to come together with the death of their mother so that they can plan her funeral—a taxing situation, to say the least. Since they do not get along, their "relationship" tests both of them. It is so very difficult to prepare for the death of a parent and even though everything may well be worked out ahead of time, the actual death is not just heartbreaking but trying. Regardless of how they feel about each other, they are brothers and even when tempers flare up and emotions get very high, they know that this is the time to say goodbye to the woman who gave them life. Each brother is forced to look within himself and deal with his feelings, his anger and range and his prejudices.

User review:
Almut Getto created something only a few filmmakers are able to – an intimate portrait of young people falling in love for the first time. Although it all happens with one of the protagonists being HIV-positive, this is not another melodramatic movie about AIDS. No! "Fickende Fische" is first and above all a love story among two 16 year olds with all the normal problems, and AIDS being "just" one of them. Getto and her young actors perfectly walk the narrow line between intimate feelings and unrelenting fate – and manage to make the viewer an intimate part of this relationship.
Just as if we were one of the protagonists ourselves we feel our heart beat as they touch almost unknowingly for the first time; and feel with them each and every step of the following relationship.

The teacher struggles to bring her back, whilst at the same time himself questioning the world of reality. The worlds of fantasy and reality clash with tragic consequences.
User review:
I wasn't quite sure what genre THE FOREST was for the first fifty minutes. It seemed to be a fable for children, with morals on the evil of bullying, as well as befriending ghosts and goblins in the forest. A little clumsy with the set-up, but that was all soon forgiven when the second half of this movie ventured into a dark mysterious path with some violence and other adult themes. So it eventually had my attention, and I was glad that my finger didn't press the stop button earlier.
The two main protagonists, the teacher and the silent student, were well crafted characters that held you in there until the story took an interesting turn for that second half. More importantly was the performances by the actors that made these characters shine. The child actress, Wannasa Wintawong, took the limelight, along with her companion, Tanapol Kamkunkam, who played the feral boy, protector of the forest. The two played off each other so well that it gave the film a sense of neorealism.
